When you hear the words ‘student unionist’ in LASPOTECH what comes to mind is a vibrant ALUTA-spirited person, yeah you are right, On our very first exclusive we have a very important personality in person of the Lagos State Polytechnic Students’ Union President, i bet there are a lot of things you do not know about his background and the things his administration has achieved in the past few months, well as we all know due to the Corona Virus pandemic he happens to be the longest ever serving Union president in LASPOTECH.

If you want to hear what he has to say then keep on reading

A BRIEF INTRODUCTION ABOUT YOURSELF

My Name is Comrade Olamide Emmanuel, I am the President of LASPOSUG 19/20 (Students’ Union Government), I come from an extended family with eight siblings, I have three brothers and four sisters, I am the second to the last born and I lost my dad at age 16, I just left secondary school then, I have been with my mother and siblings ever since we’ve survived although I came from a rich beginning with quality education, I had my primary education at Citizens Nursery and Primary School to Baptist Boys then Caleb international schools later rounding up my secondary education at Lawbson International College, yeah I had like a botti kind of beginning but then after losing my dad and all that we had to make do of what we have, I wrote jamb, I never failed jamb but I didn’t get admission through it so I ended up doing Part-Time for my ND Programme still in LASPOTECH here and I had to switch to full time for my HND Programme because I finished with 3.48 during my ND Programme.

WHAT ARE YOUR MAJOR LIKES AND DISLIKES?

I like honesty, humility, I like being real, I like to say it how it is. I am not a razz person but I can switch when I want to, I like the fact that I can relate and connect to every one and I also like communicating with people as per my dislikes I don’t like proud people, you wanting to prove that you are better or bigger than every other person, I also hate stealing I rather not be rich than to steal to be rich.

YOUR FAVORITE LINE?

My Favorite Line has to be from a mentor I like to address him as Emmanuel White, he said something about my ambition then, he said Olamide “if it has pleased God that you will be President then you will be President”, that line I will never forget because I worked through my campaign and other things with that line.

HOW HAVE YOU BEEN ABLE TO MIX POLITICS AND EDUCATION ?

Yeah, mixing politics and education has not been too easy, I wont lie I missed so many classes so many tests, because there would be calls here and there that you have to be at a particular police station, you have to be at one event and other emergency like situations which are always never ending, Yes my education did suffer, my grades aren’t how they would naturally be if I wasn’t President but overall you have to find a way to balance it so that even if one will suffer, it wont suffer too much on the long run your education is your primary goal in school and if you focus more on your education you probably wont reap the benefit of being the S.U.G President.

WHAT HAVE YOU ACHIEVED DURING YOUR TENURE AS THE S.U.G PRESIDENT ?Corona virus was a big minus on my administration but I still achieved some things on behalf of the students; at NANS level I was able to deliver the NANS JCC Lagos, General Secretary to Comr. Akindele David S.U.G President 18/19, I was also able to deliver at NANS JCC level also the Action and Mobilization Officer in Person of Comrade Olowonisaye and I was also able to deliver National Association of Polytechnic Students (N.A.P.S) Clerk in Person of Asiwaju Adini p.k.a A3 , All these on the political front.I got various awards from various student union bodies but then I achieved a lot than I can actually talk about now and also met a lot of people it was an achievement for me personally because you don’t get to meet these kind of people everydayOther Achievement we he had as a team, I mean with the other union officers, we were able to have the LASPO HEALTH DAY Where thousands of students benefited from free health care and check up like the eye clinic, the blood sugar check, geno type check amidst various other free check ups that was free for thousands of students to benefit from it.During the First lock down phase we had two different outreaches where we shared over one thousand palliatives to students while at the second phase we shared over three thousand palliatives, the second one was able to happen all thanks to the support we had from the State Government, We were also able to renovate and refurnish the student Union Building.

HAVE YOU EVER REGRETTED IT EVEN IF IT’S JUST ONCE THAT YOU CONTESTED IN THE S.U.G ELECTIONS?

No! I never and I don’t think I will ever regret being the S.U.G President because its life changing and defining, initially it looked like I put my own life plans on hold because of this but on the long run it all together for your own good, imagine how I can improve on my previous life plans with all the resources I now have as a person, I can never regret it. The experiences are not what money can buy, the ups and downs are what made me stronger and it has given be a better sense of leadership, I don’t think I will ever regret being the S.U.G President.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER ALL THESE?

My Plans After all these is to rest for like two months just to clear my head because I really need to rest I have had a lot of sleepless nights, Of course there’s service but I will like to put in for internship in one or two areas of interests and probably I would still be able to serve that same year with a different batch so after service I would set up my own media company and from there we move on to the market to let them know we are here!I also would be running for one or two political offices because I think the government should be youth inclusive and I know I have what it takes to lead to see how I can put my experience as the S.U.G President in real time.

YOUR ADVICE TO THE ASPIRANT THAT MIGHT EVENTUALLY BE YOUR SUCCESSOR?

My Advice for the next S.U.G President is very simple and it would be “Focus on why you are in office ” nothing more nothing less, you will have a lot of distractions from people outside the union and union members just focus your eyes on the finish line, because when those turbulences will come it’s your focus that will guide you through. Just stay humble, stay true to yourself and focus on the prize.

ANY ADVICE FOR LASPOTIANS THAT ARE LOOKING UP TO YOU?

For laspotians looking up to me and I have been a source of influence and motivation to, I would like to say I am very grateful for the chance you have given me to represent you at the S.U.G level and I would not advice you to look up to me yet because I am still yet to find my own feet but if you are, its just one word like I have said before “remain humble!” that is my watch word. Humility, so many doors has been opened to me because of humility, so I know if you’d get to the top the number one thing that will take you to the top is humility, when you are humble people will go the extra mile for you, they will show you love and support.

That is all for this interview, thanks for taking your time to read we appreciate you kindly share to every laspotian you know and feel free to use the comment section, you can also recommend someone for us to interview and we will work on it as soon as we get the necessary things in place.

  1. My major takeaway is this

Yes my education did suffer, my grades aren’t how they would naturally be if I wasn’t President but overall you have to find a way to balance it so that even if one will suffer, it wont suffer too much on the long run your education is your primary goal in school and if you focus more on your education you probably wont reap the benefit of being the S.U.G President.

  2. Key take away for me
